Nothing is more American than America’s favorite pastime, baseball. If you’re heading to Boston you must try to score tickets to see the Boston Red Sox at the oldest Major League Baseball stadium in use, Fenway Park. It has been home to the Boston Red Sox since it opened in 1912. Fenway Park celebrated its centennial on April 20, 2012, and it was also added to the National Register of Historic places that same year. It is located at 4 Yawkey Way near Kenmore Square in the compact Fenway-Kenmore neighborhood. If you’re not familiar with its location, you could easily walk by and not realize without looking up and seeing the lights.
Fenway Park and Wrigley Field in Chicago are the only two remaining classic parks in the US. Of course because of their age and locations they are restrained with renovations and additions. Fenway Park has one of the lowest seating capacities of all baseball stadiums and can only accommodate 40,000 cheering, or booing spectators. Be aware that tickets are hard to come by, so if you want to see a game, plan far in advance to purchase.
There have been several additions to Fenway Park over the years and this has led to some quirky architectural features that the park is known for. It is most famous for the Green Monster in left field. It is the nickname for the wall that stands just over 37 feet. The Green Monster was part of the original construction in 1912 and was initially made of wood, and covered in plastic in 1976. It wasn’t painted in green until 1947. With the many additions that have been made to the park there was terrace style seating added on top of the wall. Because of the height of the Green Monster a fly ball that lands above the red line on the top and bounces back onto the field of play are ruled a home run.
Sports venues such as these provide a unique and exciting look at the history of our nation. From Fenway to Yankee Stadium, cities throughout the U.S. provide visitors with a fun way to enjoy the day with their families and friends.
